Great Governance Series
The Western Colorado Nonprofit Council in conjunction with San Juan Rural Philanthropy Days is pleased to sponsor a series of training opportunities for the region. The “Great Governance Training Series” is based on Principles and Practices for Nonprofit Excellence in Colorado, produced by the Colorado Nonprofit Association.
Great Volunteer Management
The fifth training of the Great Governance series will be Great Volunteer Management taught by Carlene Goldthwaite, Principal Consultant at Create Real Growth. This workshop will explore best practices along the continuum of volunteer service: recruiting, onboarding/training, reward & recognition, managing performance and succession planning. You’ll walk out with ideas and useful tools to build a strong, sustainable group of volunteers and to increase volunteer satisfaction.
Carlene is a self-proclaimed “serial volunteer.” Most recently, she served as Director of the Colorado State Council of the Society of Human Resources Management. In her various volunteer roles, Carlene has developed structures, tools, and processes to engage and retain volunteers. Her organization, Create Real Growth, specializes in working with organizational leaders to achieve sustainable results, bringing expertise in organizational systems, leadership development, and managing individual performance. This multi-faceted approach ensures that effective work systems encourage and support high-performing employees.

Pen to Paper: A 3-Part Series – Coming to the Western Slope in 2016!
Pen to Paper: A 3-Part Series is the only professional development opportunity of its kind in Colorado to receive personalized consulting and guidance on your current grant application. Each session is a hands-on writing workshop with an opportunity for instructor feedback and peer review. Each of the 3 sessions focuses on a different element of theColorado Common Grant Application (CGA) and participants will have time to get direct feedback from development professionals at CRC and time for revisions in between sessions. Please bring a laptop, a partially completed grant application and specific guidelines to accompany the application.
PART 1: DEVELOP YOUR EFFECTIVE CASE FOR SUPPORT
Defining your program goals, objectives, activities, and timelines are the most critical part of effective grant writing and help to build your strong case for support. Part 1 of the Pen to Paper Grant Writing series will focus on how to maximize the limited space available to tell your story in your grant proposal and work to clarify and refine your organizations goals and objectives with the help of peer review.
PART 2: MISSION BUILDING BLOCKS
Nonprofit best practices are the critical building blocks for any effective and sustainable organization. Many of the questions in the Common Grant Application are directly related to widely accepted sector best practices, and Part 2 of the Pen to Paper Grant Writing series will focus on reviewing and interpreting nonprofit principles and best practices and writing a narrative that references instructions to ensure you are answering the questions posed in an application.
PART 3: GRANT ATTACHMENTS & TIPS FOR SUCCESS
Budgets and financial attachments are equally important as your grant narrative, especially for funders who are looking to invest in your organization and programs. Part 3 of the Pen to Paper Grant Writing series will focus on tips to avoid common mistakes and the essential elements of the attachments section of a grant proposal as well as tools for grants management and infrastructure.
