Explore the Southeast
On your way in and out of town for SE RPD, make sure to check out all that the region has to offer! Below are just a handful of the “stop-worthy” places in Southeast Colorado.
What to Do in Lamar
- Explore historic downtown Craig: From antiques to flavored oils, you’ll enjoy strolling the streets of downtown Craig, featuring two restaurants, a coffee bar and a park.
- River walk: Take Ranney Street south to Loudy-Simpson Park where you can walk along the riverside nature trail.
- Carving tour: For 19 years, the city of Craig has hosted a Father’s Day weekend carving festival – Whittle the Wood Rendezvous. You’ll see relics of past events throughout the community, but the largest concentration is in City Park
- Yampa Valley Golf Course: You probably don’t have time to get in 9 holes, but you could visit the driving range, hit a bucket of balls. We know you’ll be back once you see our beautiful riverside golf course.
- Museum tour: Visit the Museum of Northwest Colorado, home of one of the nation’s largest cowboy and gunfighter collections. Or, check out the Wyman Museum, which boasts a working blacksmith shop, country store and is home to Junior, a live elk. You can also stop by the Craig Chamber of Commerce & Moffat County Visitor Center and ask to tour David Moffat’s private railroad car “Marcia” from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
- Yampa Valley Fiberworks: Drive north for about 10 minutes and you’ll see a small sign that doesn’t quite hint at the big experience you’re in for. Lewis and Lorrae Moon are happy to give tours of their wool mill operations, introduce you to the alpacas that provide some of their raw products and show your through their store that not only features products they produce, but a variety of crafts from local artisans.
- Cedar Mountain hike: Cedar Mountain is a 10-minute drive north and offers a 3.5-mile round-trip hike with a switchback trail that makes the gain in elevation doable for all fitness levels. You’ll be rewarded with views of Craig, Bears Ears and Mt. Werner in Steamboat Springs.
- Elkhead Reservoir: Head east on U.S. Hwy 40 about 10 minutes to the turn off for Elkhead Reservoir. Dip your toes in the water from sandy beaches or circle the lake on an easy trail.
- Art lovers: Colorado Northwestern Community College installed a permanent art collection containing more than 80 pieces from artists across the state. Visitors are welcome to wander the halls and enjoy art from a variety of mediums.
- Sandrocks trail to petroglyphs: Hike or bike along the Sandrocks. If you use the Finley Lane entrance, you’ll view some of the petroglyphs that lie along the trail.
- Wildlife viewing drive: Head south on Ranney Street and turn east on County Road 394 (golf course road). Once past the airport, turn south on County Road 33, which ends at Colorado 317, where you’ll turn west into the small town of Hamilton. Head north on Colorado Hwy 13 to return. You’ll see pronghorn and mule deer and possible elk and a variety of birds and possibly foxes, rabbits, raccoons and more.
